7 Great Ways to Tighten and Brighten Your Eyes!
We often hear that our eyes are the windows to our soul – and it could be argued that they’re windows to our health, too! Our eye area houses some of the most delicate skin on our bodies, and is often the first area to show visible signs of anxiety, illness, or sleeplessness. There are loads of eye creams on the market claiming to reduce puffiness, fine lines, and signs of fatigue - however, you may be able to achieve similar results with some of these powerful (and natural!) homemade remedies:
Cucumber Slices
There’s a reason the facemask and cucumber slice combination is so ubiquitous on TV and in the movies! If you’re short on money or time, a simple application of very cold cucumbers (slice them and leave in the freezer for 10 minutes) will reduce inflammation and redness. The refreshing properties of the cucumber will make your eyes feel rejuvenated, and will also afford you a few precious minutes for meditation – or a nap!
Egg Whites
If your eyes are looking puffy and you’re seeing bags start to form underneath them, you can make a homemade eye mask using egg whites. All you need to do is separate 2 eggs and whisk the whites up into a frothy consistency. Close your eyes and apply the whites with a soft brush, then leave on for 10 minutes before washing off. Your skin will instantly feel tighter, and, with regular use of this eye mask, it will appear visibly firmer too!
Water
You’re probably tired of hearing about the miraculous benefits of water, but hydration is key to healthy skin and a healthy body. Aim for at least 90 ounces of water (11-12 cups) per day, and your eyes will look tighter and brighter – with or without eye masks. Bonus water tip: Ice! Rubbing ice around the eye area for 30-45 seconds will instantly revive the eye area. Bonus water tip #2: Splashing the face alternately with warm and cool water instantly wakes up the skin and brings vitality to the face, especially the eye area. You can do this by filling up two bowls with warm and cool water, or try warm and cold towels on the face for about 20 seconds each time - 3 cycles!
Rosewater
Rosewater is a powerful way to achieve dewy skin, and is a particularly good home remedy for an inflamed eye area skin. Some even swear by rosewater eye drops, but we love the good ol' fashioned way - cleansing the area around your eyes with rosewater twice a day that can yield great results. If you have extra time, apply cold rosewater to a cotton pad and apply over the eye area for 5-10 minutes!
Green Tea
Green tea is loaded with antioxidants and bioflavonoids, which reduce inflammation and help fight bacteria, meaning this remedy is especially effective if you have a slight infection or irritation. Simply leave a moist tea bag on each eye for 15 minutes, at least once a day.
Potato
Yes, you read that right! You can use slices of potato, as you would cucumber, and apply to the eyelids for 20 minutes at a time. If you suffer from dark circles under the eyes, we've heard of some even leaving these on overnight under an eye mask and seeing great results!
Honey
A thin layer of honey, applied to the eyes at night time for about 20 minutes, will tighten the skin around the eyes and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines (we recommend washing off with cold water and gently icing afterwards!). You can also use honey as a gentle cleanser, for its natural antibacterial properties!
