How Ayurveda Differs from Modern Beauty Products—And Gives Real, Lasting Results
Many women find themselves cycling through different skincare products, hoping to find the ones that really work. Unfortunately, this process takes time, money, and the risk of having one’s skin react adversely to unfamiliar formulas and fragrances. Moreover, people often find themselves needing different products for different skincare needs, like hydration, acne reduction, toning, and so on. Despite the abundance of products and resources for skincare that exist today, the process of figuring out what works often feels daunting and frustrating.
Ayurveda, the ancient science of Indian natural medicine that originated over 5,000 years ago, offers an approach to modern beauty woes that reconfigures how we think about beauty. Rather than trying to find the right product to treat specific conditions, those who practice Ayurveda take a holistic approach: by establishing balance between mind, body, spirit, and the environment, one’s health improves—and so does one’s skin. In short, while many modern products address and reduce the symptoms of larger ailments that manifest in our skin (like inflammation and acne), Ayurveda treats the root causes of those ailments. And while modern beauty products focus on the skin in isolation, Ayurvedic beauty products target both the external and the internal systems, delivering natural nutrients that improve both skin and health.
While many people associate Ayurveda with the concept of doshas, and often use their own doshas to guide their health practices, we can also think of Ayurvedic balance more broadly. As Ayurvedic practitioner Avanti Kumar-Singh, MD tells goop, “nature is made of five elements—space, air, fire, water, and earth—that make up everything in the universe, including us. When the five elements within you are in harmony with the five elements outside of you, you have health.” Through this broader idea of achieving balance within ourselves and with nature, we can see that there are Ayurvedic practices that benefit all of us—regardless of our dosha. These practices include yoga, self-massage (or Abhyanga), Shirodhara, oil pulling, and more.
UMA & Ayurveda: An All-Natural Approach to Beauty
While introductions to Ayurveda often focus on health practices and diet, at UMA, we channel ancient Ayurvedic wisdom to take a nuanced approach to modern beauty and skincare. The processes of developing our products are rooted in science-backed Ayurvedic knowledge and immense care for the quality of our ingredients. Our founder comes from a line of ancestors who were Ayurvedic doctors for the Indian royal family, and our ingredients and oils are cultivated directly at the UMA family estate in India. By carefully crafting organic formulas from natural Ayurvedic botanicals, we cultivate products that not only make powerful topical improvements to our skin, but also bring greater balance to our minds and bodies.
Our Absolute Anti Aging Face Oil, for example, harnesses potent orange essential oil and pomegranate oil to effectively combat the free radical damage that leads to the formation of wrinkles, age spots, and hyperpigmentation—all without the use of chemicals or GMOs. Our Beauty Boosting Navel Therapy Oil utilizes clarifying neem and hydrating mustard oil to not only moisturize and detoxify the navel area, but also to deliver balancing nutrients to the body. According to the philosophy of Nabhi Chikitsa (navel therapy/treatment), the body’s center plays an important foundation for balance due to its rich blood vessels. Thanks to these blood vessels, our navel therapy oil is easily absorbed into the body. In addition, our Perfectly Pure Soothing Baby Oil hydrates babies’ skin through gentle, soothing rose and sandalwood while also providing essential nutrients in the form of tea tree, geranium, and avocado.
In all of our products, we harness Ayurvedic wisdom to develop formulas that recognize the interconnectedness of our skin, minds, and bodies. Not only are they designed to improve and enhance the skin, but they also soothe the senses and promote overall wellness.
