5 Quick Tricks for Luscious Lips

How+To+Exfoliate+Lips

Whether it’s due to the sub-tundra temperatures some of us have weathered lately or because we're not drinking as much water as our bodies truly need (guilty!), our lips are often quick to get dry and cracked, which can look and feel unpleasant! Here are a few simple ways to keep your lips looking smooth and healthy:

Exfoliate

Most of us make it a point to exfoliate our bodies in the shower, but often forget about our lips! While there are store bought lip scrubs on the market, a gentle DIY solution will do the trick just as well! Try mixing a small amount of olive oil with an equal portion of brown sugar (or coffee), and rub it into a paste. To apply, scrub the mixture over your lips for a minute or two, and wash off gently, using warm water and a washcloth.

Deep Condition

If your lips are severely dehydrated and in need of more than a swipe of lip balm, try a homemade, overnight deep conditioning treatment. One of our favorite solutions consists of equal parts honey and extra virgin olive oil. Apply a generous dose to your lips before bed, and let the mixture soak in overnight. Wipe off the residue in the morning with a warm washcloth.

DIY Lip Balm

A great, natural lip balm is a handbag essential, and a quick and easy way to keep lips soft and hydrated all day long. Many store bought balms contain petroleum, which is best avoided (see why here), so try making a batch of your own! A simple mixture of beeswax and coconut oil will do the trick just fine, but for a skin repairing boost (and refreshing citrus scent!) try adding a drop of vitamin C-absorption supporting orange essential oil. (Essential oils don't have vitamins, but citrus based essential oils have been shown to aid the absorption of Vitamin C from other sources).

Natural Sun Protection (and from sneaky forms of UV light) When Indoors

Some naturally derived oils offer light SPF protection, without the chemical additives in commercial SPF products. While it’s always best to keep your skin covered and avoid sunshine during peak afternoon hours, applying an oil like avocado oil to the lips when indoors will moisturize deeply and provide a level of protection from UV damage (that can happen at some levels even indoors!) for the delicate skin on your lips!

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

Topical treatments can only be so effective, and work best in tandem with healthy eating and drinking habits! Make sure to get enough water each day – the old adage about aiming to drink eight glasses of fluid a day is still a good guideline to follow. It’s also a great idea to incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet, as they are richer in water content than their processed counterparts!
