Aditi: The Infinite Power of Motherhood

At UMA, our approach to beauty, wellness and womanhood is one rooted in generations-old Ayurvedic knowledge. We believe that ancient tradition has so much wisdom to offer us today, from medicinal remedies to spiritual guidance.
Turning to stories of powerful goddesses in Hindu mythology is one way to revel in the amazing spirit of womanhood. That’s why we’re doing quick spotlights on several awe-inspiring goddesses, including Uma, Saraswati and Lakshmi. Regardless of one’s background or beliefs, the stories and spirits of these goddesses offer inspiration and motivation for all women, encouraging us to celebrate the powerful goddess in each of us.
In this blog post, we’re featuring Aditi, the limitless mother of the gods. She represents the potent, life-giving energy of motherhood—an energy that is endless and infinite, making the turning of the universe possible.
The Story and Symbolism of Aditi
In Sanskrit, the word “Aditi” means boundless. Highly revered in the Vedas, Aditi is regarded as a personification of the infinite and as an endless motherly source. She is considered to be the mother of many gods, including Vishnu, and of the celestial deities called the Adityas and the spirits of the zodiac. More than just being confined to literal motherhood through the birthing of sons, Aditi is the creator of all the heavenly bodies, making her a personification of profound creativity and the limitlessness of the universe.
As a source of nourishment and support for all forces of life, Aditi is typically depicted as a cow, or as a graceful female figure riding a rooster. She carries weapons like a trident, sword and bow, which are said to aid her in protecting her worshippers and fighting off demons. Given her endless power and mothering presence, Aditi is frequently worshipped for her ability to grant good fortune, healing and protection. She is believed to provide her worshippers with safeguarding from danger, good luck, freedom and prosperity.
All in all, Aditi represents strength, care and a nurturing spirit that fosters the proliferation of life, hope and tranquility. She channels the most profound facets of motherhood, embodying compassion and love. The story of Aditi reminds us of the awe-inspiring nature of mothers everywhere—the limitless power and love they hold and their irreplaceable role in the world.
