Ditch Your Winter Routine: Spring Clean Your Skincare
It’s that time of year again, flowers are in bloom, pollen is in the air and you’re finally breaking out those hot new sandals. This is a transitional time for a lot of things—including your skin. While winter can wreak havoc on your dermis thanks to blistering winds and indoor heating, changes in temperature and humidity this time of year can be just as detrimental to your complexion. The solution? Changing out your skincare routine in much the same way you change our your wardrobe.
- Ditch the heavy moisturizer:
Winter’s dry, icy winds can cause a frustrating amount of dryness and flaking. So it’s natural to add lots of moisturizing creams and lotions to your regimen. (Fun fact: did you know that most moisturizers don't actually provide hydration to your skin, they just prevent moisture from escaping?) For now, set those aside until you experience dryness again, and instead try a lighter moisturizer or serum—or get in on one of our favorite beauty trends, face oils! These lightweight formulas are hydrating sans oiliness and absorb easily.
- Cut down on your skincare products:
If there’s one word you should remember about spring skincare it is this: simplify. Serums and creams followed by foundation every morning? Not unless you want a caked on look that starts to slide towards the end of the day. Try to limit the number of products you wear under your makeup in the morning to one or two. Consider a tinted moisturizer to replace your moisturizer and foundation, or a light serum or oil followed by foundation.
- SPF. SPF. SPF:
Remember that bright yellow orb you feel like you’ve barely seen since November? Well it’s back! Time to protect your skin from the sun’s potentially harmful ways, especially as you start spending more time outside. Choose a good sunscreen, preferably a zinc based formula (it's more naturally derived and the mineral based formula protects your skin immediately after application). Suntegrity or Coola are both excellent options. Another easy way to get SPF? Make sure it’s in your foundation.
- Treat oiliness and acne with gentle, natural ingredients:
Humidity and warmth can cause some dreaded oiliness and breakouts in the spring. Look for products with essential oils like clove and tea tree which act as antibacterial agents, as well as lavender, which acts as a soothing agent. These ingredients are much less harsh on your skin then their synthetic counterparts like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, and will get you similar results. Since your skin is likely still recovering from winter, it’s important to give it a little extra TLC. For a gentle scrub made from natural ingredients, try our Deeply Clarifying Face Oil, designed to rebalance the delicate relationship between moisture and nutrition on skin.
- Don’t forget about the lips:
Spring means it’s time to break out those pretty pastel lipsticks you ditched the last few months. Even though winter's ultra-chapped lips may be behind you, don’t neglect caring for your pout now. If your lips are dry and cracked, try a naturally hydrating lip balm like coconut and beeswax to make sure your pout is makeup ready. And ditto on the SPF: your lips can get sunburned too! Look for a lip balm with SPF—even if you're only going outside for a little while.
