Using Ayurveda to Improve Productivity, Calm and Focus at Work

An understanding of your dosha, and that of your colleagues, can help you bring out your individual best, enjoy your work and thrive at your workplace. 

Vata types at the workplace

The Vata dosha symbolizes airy, mobile, and restless traits. Similarly, the Vata types like to be on the move continuously. They like newness at the workplace which can offer them an advantage in professions with unpredictable workdays. Vatas excel in creative endeavors as well, so look for them in positions that encourage imagination, creativity, and dreaming. Additionally, because of their lightness and movement, vatas are at ease in fast-paced surroundings and are known for their rapid thinking.

However, they can frequently lose attention because of their habitual multitasking, and can easily become overwhelmed. If you are a vata, avoid committing to too many projects. Additionally, set reachable, periodic, and small goals.

Vata's propensity to feel overburdened during a busy day can be reduced by taking regular breathing pauses throughout the day.

Pitta types at the workplace

Pitta dosha symbolizes fire: drive, sharpness, and determination. As a result, they are among the world's top planners, organizers, and detail-oriented individuals. Not only do they do well in these areas, but Pittas also thrive in work environments with structure, routine, and goals because they love the opportunities and projects that are given to them.

Pittas can be fiercely idealistic! Pittas are very direct and, once they have a plan, they just want to get things done, which might lead to unintentional hurt feelings. The Pitta tongue can be particularly harsh when they are under pressure or are not getting their way. Teams flourish and function well under a balanced pitta's leadership. Pittas need to establish reasonable expectations for others and themselves in order to avoid workplace friction.

Kapha types at the workplace

People with more Kapha energy have an unmatched degree of steadiness and mental endurance because of the earth and water components. They excel at tasks that call for persistence and patience. They are among the most devoted workers because they don't give up easily or quickly. Since they prefer to move more slowly and independently than Vata, the less stimulating and routine their work environment and timetable, the better.

Because they dislike change, Kaphas may seem less nimble, e.g., adopt a new company strategy. Even though it can force them outside of their comfort zone, Kappas should frequently change their environment and seek out competition as a way to balance the more sluggish Kapha energies at work.

It is important that you aim at establishing good professional relationships with your colleagues, supervisors, and subordinates. From an Ayurvedic perspective, there are several tenets from living a balanced life, that lend themselves to forging healthy and successful workplace relationships.

1. Practise gratitude 

Ayurveda stresses the practice of expressing gratitude to nature, to yourself, and to your peers as well. According to Ayurveda, the quest for happiness at the workplace revolves around the concept of Santosha, which means contentment. Our brains release Oxytocin when we receive gratitude or validation for something. According to studies, oxytocin is the hormone that is most important for social interaction and bonding. Santosha or the practice of gratitude can enhance mood, relationships with your colleagues, and sentiments of hope and optimism.

2. Know, and have appreciation for, your co-workers’ personalities

You can better comprehend how others behave by paying attention to the influence of the doshas. For instance, while you might be able to handle direct feedback with ease, someone who works for you may prefer a different style. Recognizing this nuance and moderating your style accordingly will help foster understanding and respect.

3. Understand your strengths and limits

You will be happy if you establish and uphold your personal boundaries. With practice, you can communicate to your coworkers and leadership exactly what you require to excel at work. Setting limits for oneself on the mental, physical, and emotional levels is a great form of self-care and respect.

4. Elevate your workplace environment

Create your elevated, dosha inspired workspace that allows you to focus well and thrive at your job. Use aromatherapy oils and candles to encourage calm or focus, as you most need, while working. Keep relaxing teas and tonics handy.
